A recent report by an online insurance broker sought to find a definitive answer to the age-old questions of which U.S. states have the best drivers and which U.S. states have the worst drivers. In seeking an answer to this question, however, the researchers did far more than just look at car accident reports from recent years.

In fact, Car Insurance Comparison.com devised an elaborate system that ranked the states in a variety of categories (from 1 to 50) based on information provided by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), and the American Motorists Association.

Here, the state that performed the worst in a given category earned a ranking/score of 50, while the state that performed the best earned a ranking/score of one.

The total scores were then added up and the states with the overall highest scores were ranked as having the worst drivers, while the states with the overall lowest scores were ranked as having the best drivers.

The categories in question included the following:

  • Fatalities per 1 million miles
  • Ticketing rank
  • Drunk driving
  • Failure to obey traffic signs/signals
  • Careless driving

In order, the states with the best drivers were from the following states:

1. Rhode Island

2. Connecticut

3. Massachusetts

4. Virginia

5. New Hampshire

In order, the states with the worst drivers were from the following states:

50. Louisiana

49. Missouri

48. Texas

47. Florida

46. Oklahoma

New York performed fairly well, coming in at number 29 on the list. Here, the state ranked fifth in terms of fatalities per million miles, 44th in terms of ticketing rank, 16th in terms of drunk driving, 34th in terms of failure to obey traffic signs/signals and 17th in terms of careless driving.
